Remarks  In early September, Lt. Hummel was promoted to platoon commander. He was wounded in action during preparations for the assault on the Siegfried Line when the 36th Regiment came under heavy enemy mortar fire; he died of his wounds on September 10, near Verviers, Belgium, about 17 miles from the German border.
